Manifesto

Fine Photography is founded on the principle that photography is fundamentally a democratic art. There are two senses in which this is true.

The final work of art in photography is the print. With modern technology (or without) any number of identical copies of a photograph can be made in a purely mechanical fashion. It is therefore in the very nature of photography that the supply of great photographic art is, for all practical purposes, unlimited. Theoretically, then, everyone who likes a photograph could have that photograph for little more than the cost of production in labor and materials. In reality, of course, in our free market economy, the supply of photographic art is limited and not everyone who would like to own a particular image can afford to. Photographers who make their living from their photography are forced into the artificial situation of making "limited editions" of their work. This is counter to the nature of photography and is simply an economically driven phenomenon. In the best of all possible worlds photographers could live comfortably persuing their art and that art would be available to all who wanted it. Obviously we do not live in the best of all possible worlds.

There is second and more important sense in which photography is fundamentally democratic. Unlike the other plastic arts the techniques of photography can be mastered by almost anyone, in a relatively short time. (Please don't confuse technical mastery with artistic mastery.) This makes competence in the medium of photography thousands of times more frequent than, for example, competence in the techniques of painting. It is our contention that, because of this characteristic of photography, there are many times more great photographers than there are known great photographers.

This hypothesis is the reason for Fine Photography's existence. Here we provide a home for the unknown photographers of the world, those who have never had an exhibit, never sold a single photograph, but are nevertheless great. We hope to make it possible for these unknown photographers to become known and sell their photographs. At the same time we hope to convince the art lover that greatness in art has nothing to do with scarcity or fame but inheres in the work itself. Further we provide a place where those art lovers who are willing to judge art in itself will find authentic works to purchase at prices within their means.
